The 10 best indoor plants for your bedroom

Having indoor plants is a great way to spruce up your home and can even give you a better sleep. Here's a Top 10 list of great indoor plants for your bedroom.

By Staff, AccuWeather

It's always nice to have fresh air outside, but that doesn't mean you can't have fresh air inside. Decorate with these plants for a healthier home.

Whether you live in an apartment in the city or a sprawling house in the country, having plants inside always seems to open up space and have a universal calming effect. If you are looking for low-maintenance, useful, and/or just plain beautiful plants for your bedroom, look no further. We have put together a list of 10 indoor plants that will add that elusive missing element to your bedroom.

1- Aloe Vera - Aloe Barbadensis Miller

If you are looking for better sleep, the aloe vera plant will make for the perfect bedroom plant addition. Aloe vera, while it has its obvious healing effects for burns and other injuries, also releases oxygen that will purify the air and help you breathe easier as you get your beauty sleep. The Aloe vera plant needs lots of sun, but only a little bit of water. If you have a sunny shelf that needs some sprucing up in your bedroom, look no further than this helpful plant.

2- Asparagus Fern - Asparagus Setaceus

The asparagus fern is a member of the asparagus family and has fluffy-looking bright green tendrils that spill over the side of whatever pot you choose to stick it in. No matter if you have a ton of natural light or barely any at all, the asparagus fern will thrive. To make sure this bedroom plant survives, make sure to keep the soil moist and expose it to sunlight occasionally. The asparagus fern makes a great addition to any bedroom plant collection with its unique look and fun personality.

3- Lavender - Lavandula Angustifolia

A natural perfume, English lavender, will cleanse your bedroom of any bad aromas as it has a powerful fresh scent. Along with the benefit of smell, lavender will add a bright spot of color, not usually seen in indoor plants with its royal purple hues. Lavender may also improve your breathing or help treat skin blemishes. Not every lavender subgenre is suited for potted plant life, so be sure only to get either lavandula angustifolia or lavandula stoechas.

4- Spider Plant - Chlorophytum Comosum

If you don't have a green thumb, the spider plant will be your best friend, even if you are prone to leave it without water for days. The spider plant often prefers to be dried out between watering sessions. Don't worry too much about the name; it doesn't attract spiders. This indoor plant gets its name from the long tendrils that sprout from the center like spider legs. Indirect light and well-drained soil make this an ideal plant for the bedroom.

5- Moth Orchid - Phalaenopsis Orchidaceae

A prima donna among flowers, the orchid is known to be difficult to maintain. Still, the moth orchid is a relaxed member of the orchid family, one that can easily become a favorite plant for your bedroom. The moth orchid needs to be watered once a week, depending on how humid your climate is. It needs to be in direct to partial sunlight to flourish and get those envious blooms that are so sought after. If you're looking for something to add that final dash of glamor to your bedroom, the moth orchid is the right choice for you.

6- Air Plant - Tillandsia

You might have assumed it could get no easier than the spider plant, but you'd be wrong. Air plants need almost no care, including no soil.   The lack of soil means you won't have a plant mess to clean up in the bedroom. Along with their rather chill lifestyle, air plants come in hundreds of varieties, from your run-of-the-mill green fern looking plants to ones that look straight from a sci-fi movie with reds, purples, and blues. Have fun with your air plant! Toy around with the idea of hanging them from the ceiling in your bedroom.

7- Snake Plant - Sansevieria Trifasciata

Not to be confused with the spider plant, the snake plant is named for a creature you don't want to find in your house, let alone your bedroom. The snake plant requires very little sunlight, but a good amount of water to thrive indoors. The erect, zebra-esque striped plant stalks produce a lot of oxygen, cleansing the air you breathe to provide a more productive environment in the bedroom.

8- Succulent

The sheer number of succulents that exist and can be household plants don't all fit into one genus or family. Succulents come in a range of colors, shapes, and sizes. Some popular home editions include a string of pearls, fairy castle, or rose succulents. Don't let this small list limit you, though. There are hundreds of these plants to choose from, and many variety packs sold online and in stores. Succulents don't need much attention either and included with their adorable demeanor. They make for the perfect addition to your cute and on trendy bedroom.

9- Peace Lily - Spathiphyllum

Most of the plants compiled do better on shelves, desks, or window sills. The peace lily has some height to it and may do best as a floor plant, tucked away in the corner of the bedroom. With a gorgeous white flower at the top, the peace lily will bring you a feeling of, well, peace. Serene, elegant, and delicate, the peace lily sports deep green jungle-worthy leaves with tall stalks erupting from the center to show off the lovely white flower. Peace lilies not only help cleanse the air but also help fight off mold spores. If you're looking for an air purifier and maid all wrapped into one plant, the peace lily is perfect for you.

10- Lucky Bamboo - Dracaena Sanderiana

If you're looking for a plant that attracts luck and increases your opportunities for wealth, the lucky bamboo is the one for you. Lucky bamboo doesn't need a lot of water, sunlight, or care, but pick off dead leaves when you see them and make sure to arrange their stalks so they can support one another. While it may bring you luck, this plant can double as bedroom decor. Enjoy your newfound wealth and luck with this contemporary plantlife accessory.
