10 tips to stay cool during a heatwave

A heatwave can occur in almost any area of the world, and you must know how to remain cool to avoid any serious health complications. When there is a heatwave, it can last for several weeks, making daily living difficult, but with these tips, it is possible to remain more comfortable.

Consider an Air Conditioner in Your Home

If you don’t have an air conditioner inside your home, then a heatwave might be the tipping point for you. There are central air conditioners that will blow cold air through a home’s ductwork, but you can also find window-style air conditioners. Central air conditioners are expensive, so a window air conditioner is easier option. When you already have an air conditioner, you should make sure that it is maintained properly. This includes proper lubrication, cleaning, and changing of its air filter.

Cover the Windows with Drapes or Window Blinds

It is easier to keep your home cooler when the windows are covered with drapes or window blinds. While this may only reduce the temperature in a room by a few degrees, this can help you to feel better during a dangerous long-term heatwave. You can also cover the windows with extra blankets or sheets to keep a room darker and cooler.

Stay Hydrated

Remain Hydrated Each Day during a Heat Wave

It is vital to remain hydrated each day and night during a heatwave. Rather than only drinking a few glasses of water, you may need to drink water continually. It is important to remember that caffeinated beverages, including tea or soft drinks, can make you feel more dehydrated. Caffeine makes you urinate more often, so experts recommend drinking water instead of these beverages.

Wear Loose Garments Made from Natural Fabrics

You should wear loose garments that are made from natural fabrics so that your body’s perspiration will evaporate. A baggy T-shirt or tank top with shorts will help you to feel cooler. You can also wear a cotton sundress or nightgown inside your home to remain cool and comfortable.

Can You Stay in the Basement of Your Home?

The lower levels of your home will remain cooler, so if you have a basement, then this is a great place to stay for most of the day and night. In a multistory home, the lower level or first floor will also feel cooler because heat tends to rise upward into the higher levels of a house.

Use Fans in Your Home

Make sure to keep your home cooler by using ceiling fans or portable fans. These items can help with the circulation of the air from an air conditioner. If you don’t have an air conditioner, then fans are vital. Use several fans in different areas of your home to keep cooler throughout a heatwave.

Cool Showers or Baths

During the hottest part of the day, you can enjoy a cold shower or bath to decrease your body's temperature. If you have a swimming pool in a backyard, then you and your children can remain cooler by splashing in the water several times throughout the day.

Choose the Right Type of Bedding for Hot Weather Conditions

Sleeping at night can feel difficult during a heatwave, but you can make it easier by choosing the right type of bedding. Natural cotton will keep the air circulating around your skin, reducing uncomfortable perspiration. At the same time, make sure to choose lightweight and loose pajamas to sleep in at night.
