Tehama CHP identifies suspect shot, killed by officer during felony traffic stop in Cottonwood

California Highway Patrol officials have identified the individual shot during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Cottonwood last Friday night.

According to the CHP, 18-year-old Austin Macon shot and killed by the unidentified CHP officer during a felony traffic stop conducted around 11:45 p.m. Friday near Hooker Creek Road in Tehama County.

The CHP officer pulled over Macon and 21-year-old Teikivahimetani Guilloux-Chevalier in a white Hyundai. During a conversation with the suspects, Macon shot the CHP in the thigh. The officer returned fire shooting both Macon and Guilloux-Chevalier.

Macon was pronounced dead at the scene. Guilloux-Chevalier was transported to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

After an in-depth investigation, CHP investigators learned the vehicle Macon was driving had been reported stolen from the Las Vegas area. Also, the firearm Macon used to shoot the CHP Officer was found to have been stolen from Las Vegas.

The vehicle the pair were in had a ‘be on the lookout’ reported filed that included information that two suspects were to be considered ‘armed and dangerous.’

CHP in Tehama, however, said that during the CHP officer’s initial stop of this vehicle, this information was not known as it had stolen license plates displayed on it.

Las Vegas authorities have been contacted and TCSO Detectives are working together with them regarding both thefts from their jurisdiction.

An autopsy of Austin Macon has been conducted where it was determined he died as a result of gunshot wounds.
