Good morning, astro-nuts!
This will be a rather short posting today; just wanted to pass something along I thought was really neat. I'm a fan of the British comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974), and it was brought to my attention that the "Pythons" have asteroids named after them; how awesome is that??? (Incidentally, so do the Three Stooges and the singer Enya!). The names of these comedians are John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam. Today, Asteroid 9618 John Cleese will pass by Earth at a distance of 1.492 Astronomical Units, or roughly 138,690,064.4 miles. 9618 JohnCleese is located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, as are the rest of the "Python" asteroids. I'll keep an eye on my astronomical events and let you know when the rest of these "silly asteroids" are passing through our neighborhood.
