2nd storm in less than a week to unleash rain, snow across Middle East

More unsettled weather is set to grip the Middle East in the coming days after several storms have battered the region in recent weeks.

The first of two storms to impact the area this week has dampened locations from the Mediterranean coast to Iraq and western Iran since Monday.

This slow-moving system then tracked eastward across Iran on Thursday, allowing some locations to briefly dry out.

The steadiest rainfall from this storm affected northern Israel and Lebanon into southern Syria and central Iraq. Downpours soaked Baghdad both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rain also spread into the lower elevations of western Iran with snow falling in the mountains. In the higher terrain of Lebanon, Syria and Israel, snow accumulations were reported

On the southern side of this storm, showers briefly dampened southern Jordan, far northern Saudi Arabia and Kuwait into Wednesday.

A second storm raced southward from Turkey into the Middle East late Thursday into Friday, bringing soaking rain and high-elevation snow to Syria, Lebanon and Israel through Friday morning.

Heavy snowfall in Van, Turkey lead to the collapse of railing at the Education and Research Hospital, injuring nine people, according to Son Mühür.

The storm then lashed Jordan, Iraq and northwest Iran with periods of rain and mountain snow on Friday that can continue into Friday night and Saturday morning in Iraq and Iran.

Local downpours and high-elevation snowfall may result in travel impacts across the region, before drier weather builds across the Middle East this weekend.

The unsettled pattern over the last few weeks has increased river levels across Jordan. Officials warned on Friday that flood water could breach the Wala Dam as it nears capacity for the first time this year.
