World Cup 2018: Generally pleasant weather expected as knockout stage continues

By Faith Eherts, AccuWeather meteorologist

  • Host cities this week will enjoy mostly rain-free weather this week.

  • Warm days and cool nights are in the forecast for much of Russia.

  • The vast size of Russia means weather conditions could vary greatly at matches played throughout the country.

This week of World Cup play will be greeted by generally pleasant weather, with little rainfall expected to pester spectators, players and media members as the round of 16 winds down and the quarterfinals begin.

Sweden will take on Switzerland in the more northern city of Saint Petersburg on Tuesday, where the high temperature will peak at just 20 C (68 F). This will make it noticeably warmer than it was on Monday, with periods of sunshine making for a pleasant day. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. local time (10 a.m. EDT).

With temperatures anticipated to fall to near 12 C (55 F) overnight, spectators will want to bring along extra layers for warmth after the match.

Similarly cool conditions are in store for areas around Moscow, where Colombia and England will battle in Spartak Stadium later in the evening.

Dry weather, combined with sunshine and nearly seasonable temperatures will make for a pleasant day leading up to the match. However, as will be the case in Saint Petersburg, spectators will endure chilly weather toward the end of the match.

Sweatshirts and light jackets will make the trip out of the stadium more comfortable later that night.

Chilly conditions are expected to set in throughout Friday night.
