"Steering" Away from Sun Glare
A sunny day may not always be the best for driving.

Weather-related travel troubles typically deal with rain, snow or fog. But that beautiful sun could cause more trouble than one may think.

During the fall and winter months, with days getting shorter and nights becoming longer, drivers are forced to travel when the sun is closest to the horizon. Typically, that time is during the morning rush hour of 7:30-9:00 a.m. and evening rush hour of 5:00-6:30 p.m. The angle of the sun during these times is most potent to drivers, impairing their vision. Countless accidents have occurred due to blind spots created by sun glare and the distance perception problems that are created. Driving directly against the sun can also block peripheral areas of vision and cause sudden moments of blindness as the sun peeks out from behind surrounding objects.

There are many ways to avoid, or at least lessen, the effects of sun glare while driving. If possible, try to plan your travel around peak sunrise/sunset hours. The closer the sun is to the horizon, the worse the glare will be. Use your sun visors. They can provide relief from the sun.

Always keep sunglasses within reach. Even invest in a pair of polarized lenses; they are made to keep glare to a minimum and provide comfort while driving. Even if you don't think you need sunglasses, wear them anyway to prevent any pop-up sun glare from distracting you.

When choosing a car, avoid buying a car with a light-colored dashboard. Coupled with the slope of the windshield, a light-colored dashboard can be extremely reflective. Keep your car clean. Using a vinyl-based cleaner on your dashboard can turn the surface into a mirror. Be sure also to keep your windshield clean too. Dust particles and other foreign objects can reflect and distort light as well.
