Snow disrupts travel around Beijing, more expected on Thursday

By Eric Leister, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

People are scared to leave their homes, because of a real life polar bear invasion in Novaya Zemlya, which is near Russia's northeastern arctic coast. According to CNN, parents in the remote Russian archipelago are terrified to send their children to school after what is being described as a "mass invasion of polar bears into residential areas." Polar bears have been swarming the coastal area since December 2018, but on February 9 a state of emergency was announced. Over 50 bear sightings have been reported in the area.

Snow blanketed parts of Beijing in white on Tuesday, and more is expected later this week.

Tuesday’s snow marked the second snowfall of the season after the first arrived just last week and was one of the latest first snowfalls on record.

The snow, which accumulated less than 2.5 cm (1 inch) across much of the city and surrounding areas, still caused some travel disruptions.

Some roadways in Beijing were closed due to the snowfall, according to Xinhua.

Beijing Public Transport launched their emergency weather plan, which suspended three bus lines and provided additional rail transportation.

The travel disruption comes as travel remains higher than normal due to Lunar New Year celebrations and the Spring Festival travel period.

Cold weather and more snow are the forecast for Beijing in the coming days.

Another covering of snow will fall on the city during the day on Thursday.

Snowfall amounts of a coating to 5 cm (2 inches) are expected across the capital, and temperatures will remain below 0 C (32 F) into Friday morning.

The snow will melt by Friday afternoon as temperatures climb above 0 C (32 F) and sunshine returns.

A period of mild and dry weather is expected from Sunday into next weekend with no threat for additional snowfall.
