Sergio to unload flooding rainfall south-central US into Saturday

By Renee Duff, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

After making landfall in Mexico earlier this week, Sergio will push flooding rainfall into Texas and Oklahoma for the start of the weekend.

Sergio will continue to bring moisture into the south-central United States through Saturday, setting up even more rain next week.

Sergio made landfall around Los Castros in Baja California Sur, Mexico, during Friday morning, local time.

Heavy, flooding rainfall and gusty winds accompanied Sergio’s push across western Mexico and into southern Arizona and New Mexico through Friday night.

For the start of the weekend, the moisture from Sergio will bring not only heavy rain to Texas and Oklahoma, but even some severe weather.

Downpours are expected across cities such as Lubbock, Amarillo and Dallas, Texas and even Oklahoma City and Little Rock.

Rainfall in the heaviest areas could reach 1-2 inches, bringing some drought relief but also flash flooding. Localized amounts up to 4 inches of rain may fall from Sergio's moisture.

Along the southern edge of the rain, there can be locally strong to severe thunderstorms with the risk of damaging wind gusts and a couple of isolated tornadoes.

The rain associated with Sergio will begin to fizzle late in the day on Saturday and Saturday night as it moves through eastern Oklahoma, northeastern Texas and into Arkansas.

However, Sergio will not be the end of wet weather in the southern Plains this weekend.

A storm that will start by bringing snow into the Rockies will continue to push southward into Texas later this weekend.

The cold air associated with this system could pull show as far south as the northern Texas Panhandle.

"Areas that will start the weekend dealing with tropical rain could end up with near-record low temperatures next week," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Spamer.

Waves of rain will again set up over much of Texas and Oklahoma for next week, bringing yet another threat for flooding rain.
