Memorial Day Weekend Forecast

By news

Published May 27, 2011 11:10 AM EDT | Updated May 28, 2011 10:46 AM EDT

Copied

The weather for Memorial Day weekend is going to be iffy this weekend in what seems like a never-ending pattern of cloudy skies and showers for most of the country.

Northeast / Midwest / Great Lakes

Unfortunately, this entire region will have scattered showers, thunderstorms and all-around gloom for the first part of the weekend.

Saturday will have storminess in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes and even south into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

This unsettled pattern will ease on Sunday, where clouds will make way to sun in the Northeast, giving people in the area a chance to fire up their barbecues.

By Monday, most of the region will be dry and sunny, although scattered showers are still a possibility, especially in New England.

The good news is the region will transition to summer-like weather. Just keep in mind the sudden warm, humidity, sunshine and other factors will result in near-100-degree AccuWeather.com Real Feel temperatures.

If you don't mind carrying an umbrella this weekend, Shermans Travel suggests taking tours of Chicago, New York and of historic Washington, D.C., and what better time to see Arlington National Cemetery, the Capitol and the National Mall than on a day to honor America.

This weekend is not the most ideal for heading to the beach, so we suggest visiting beaches on the Shermans Travel top ten list, such as Coast Guard Beach, Mass., and Cape May, N.J., later in the weekend.

Southeast

In the Southeast, people from South Carolina on southward should have a rain-free, hot and humid weekend.

Beachgoers should consider Hilton Head, S.C., Sea Islands, Ga., and Daytona Beach, Fla. All three locations should have good beach conditions for most of the holiday weekend.

Plains

The Upper Midwest and northern Plains will have a stormy Memorial Day weekend, but areas to the south will be dry. The Rockies will be chilly, thanks to a cold front. For those of you planning to visit Yellowstone National Park, you may find rain and snow showers during your travels!

The Southern Plains will see a gradual return of the heat and humidity that has been absent for the past several days.

West Coast / Southwest

For those of you who will spend the holiday on the West Coast, you are in for a weather treat compared to those east of you!

The Pacific Northwest will be cool because of the same cold front that will bring rain and snow to the Rockies. However, areas from northern California through the Southwest will be seasonable, even on the cool side.

The Southwest will also be breezy, with blowing dust a threat for some areas.

In fact, Phoenix will be in the mid-80s on Memorial Day. While this may seem hot for those of you on the East Coast, the normal high temperature for that day is 98 degrees!

Shermans Travel lists many California locations in their top ten beaches, getaways and road trip lists, all of which will have dry weather this holiday weekend.

If your plans aren't finalized, they suggest visiting Palm Springs and Conorando if you want to hit the beach. If hitting the road is more your style, conditions should be warm enough to take in the Napa and Sonoma valleys with your windows down.

Keep checking back at this page for the latest information as we continue to monitor Memorial Day weather through the week.
