Heavy snow triggers deadly avalanche in Himalayan Kashmir

By Chaffin Mitchell, AccuWeather staff writer

There are a few ways to control an avalanche. The most effective way is to provoke and artificial avalanche with the help of explosives.

An avalanche killed at least ten people in the Himalayan region near Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu Highway.

Three people were rescued alive and rescuers continue to dig desperately to find survivors. Many of the victims were police officers because the snow slide hit a police post.

Two days of heavy snow have caused avalanches in the Himalayan region of Indian-administered Kashmir.

"Heavy snow fell across the region during the second half of last week. This was the same storm system that brought severe weather to the National Capitol Region," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

The snowfall has cut off the region, closing the airport and roads. For now the rescuers are able to search for more people, as weather permits.

"There can be occasional light snow from Sunday night through Monday, though this should not significant increase the risk for more avalanche," Douty said.

With supplies and support running low, Kashmiris have resorted to trying to clear the roads themselves.

"The next significant snow will move into the region Later on Tuesday and will continue to the second half of the week. While it is not expected to be as heavy as the last snowfall, this may once again increase the threat for avalanches," Douty said.
