If sizzling under the sun at the beach isn’t your idea of a fun vacation, you may want to consider summer adventures in a cool destination where average temperatures peak in the 60s and 70s F during the summer.

You do not have to leave the United States to find a cooler climate for your summer vacation.

Check out the following U.S. destinations for cool weather lovers:

San Francisco

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, San Francisco offers not only comfortable conditions in the summer, but all year round. High temperatures average around 72 while lows typically settle in the middle 50s, ideal for those looking to escape hot and humid summer weather.

Instead, travelers can spend time visiting the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, picnic at the Presidio, hike Grizzly Peak or even catch a baseball game at AT&T Park.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Looking for cooler weather somewhere in the central U.S.? Well then you should consider a trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula where high temperatures rise into middle 70s throughout the month of July.

Enjoy kayaking through the Les Cheneaux Islands or visiting Tahquamenon Falls, one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, without worrying about brutal heat. Keep a jacket handy when going outdoors at night in this region as lows fall into the middle 50s.

Anchorage provides a true cool summer getaway with high temperatures averaging in the middle 60s in July. You can also view North America's highest peak, Denali along this trail.

Tourists can get a look at Alaska's wildlife by visiting Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary. Those wanting to take advantage of the cool weather can visit Chugach State Park or Chugach National Forest, which offers more than 9,000-square miles for hiking, rafting, biking, kayaking and fishing, according to Anchorage.net.
