Remnants of Ike Create High Winds In OH, PA
UPDATE: Here is a longer list of wind gusts from the National Weather Service, including a report of 84 mph.

There were some pretty impressive wind and wave reports from the Great Lakes last night - I have archived all of them here; below are the best two. CBL01 & SBIO1 on Lake Erie reported wind gusts to 54 knots (62 mph) and Buoy #45135 on Lake Ontario showed 12-foot waves (see buoy locations & real-time data)!
Pressure on those stations fell to near 29.25". Even more interesting, the water at the Buffalo gauge went up 65 inches, then down 75 inches (6.25 feet)!
UPDATE: It's 12:20 AM and we just lost power - and my back porch canopy - here in State College. It's interesting, had I heeded Henry's warnings on his blog yesterday I would have probably taken it down for the season, but I was skeptical because the NWS hadn't issued any advisories. And they didn't - until 9 PM, when they issued a benign-sounding wind advisory. According to Alleghany Power there are over 65,000 customers without power in their area. My anemometer here at the house has only registered 48 mph so far, though that is probably in the Top 5 highest I've observed during my 2 years at this location. I'm guessing I will be showing you pictures of downed trees in the morning.
What's left of Hurricane Ike caused flooding in Chicago - see video from our Photo Gallery, and Indiana, and is bringing high winds to the Ohio Valley this evening. According to the AP, over 1.34 million people were without power in parts of Ohio and Kentucky alone.

Here in State College, Pennsylvania, home of AccuWeather HQ [Google Map], we've had gusts over 30 mph this evening. It's a surreal situation - a pre-frontal surge of heat and moisture-laden air is coming northward as well; at 8:45 PM, it's dark here of course, but 80 degrees, with a dew point of 71 (> 75 in some places), and wind of over 30 mph, all of which are unusual for this time of day -- and year!
For example, it's rarely humid enough here to make your camera fog up when you take it outside, but that happened tonight when I went out to take pictures (and a video, which uploaded a video to our Photo Gallery to show you all this, plus a beautiful sunset.
Public information reports from the Pittsburgh area indicated wind gusts near 70 mph with trees down and power out. In Ohio, widespread damage was reported, including roof damage and this report out of Warren County, Ohio: "MANY STRUCTURE COLLAPSES AND NUMEROUS STRUCTURE FIRES ". Wind gusts in the state of Ohio were in excess of Hurricane force, as high as 78 mph.
It's amazing how big of a storm Ike was, and how long he lasted.

High wind advisories have been issued for the areas which will continue to be affected by the winds this evening, including State College.
