Record Records: 4 Fives and Climate Change?

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist

Chris Burt [JessePedia], Author of "Extreme Weather", pointed out to me this week that there have been 5 Daily Precipitation Records set in 5 states during the past year, and 5 new Monthly Precip Records set in 5 states in the last two years.

IDAHO 9.40 BEAR MOUNTAIN 11/6-7/2006 7.17 RATTLESNAKE CREEK 11/23/1909 MINNESOTA 15.10 HOKAH 8/18-19/200710.84 FORT RIPLEY 7/21-22/1972 OREGON 14.30 LEES CAMP 11/6-7/2006 11.65 PORT ORFORD 11/19/1996 WASHINGTON 15.20 JUNE LAKE 11/6-7/2006 14.26 MT. MITCHELL 11/23-24/1986 WISCONSIN 11.75 STODDARD 8/18-19/200711.72 MELLEN 6/24/1946 ...and FIVE new state monthly records set in the past two years: ARIZONA 17.40 MT. LEMMON 7/200616.95 CROWN KING 8/1951 MINNESOTA 23.86 HOKAH8/2007 16.52 ALEXANDRIA 8/1900 NEW HAMPSIRE 28.70 MT. WASHINGTON10/2005 25.56 MT. WASHINGTON 2/1969 RHODE ISLAND 16.70 NORTH FOSTER 10/200515.00 ROCKY HILL 8/1955 WISCONSIN 21.74 VIROQUA 8/2007 18.33 PORT WASHINGTON 6/1996

What does all this mean? Well, if you don't believe in numerology [WIkiPedia] and ignore the 5's, it may lend credence to the idea that climate change is making weather more "extreme," i.e. heavier rain fall in shorter amounts of time. Chris points out that "out of 100 such possible records going back to the 19th century, 10 (10%) have been broken in the past two years!" If this trend continues, we will have broken all of the records in the last 100+ years by 2025 (I think, this is too much math for right after lunch!). Of course, the trend might not continue, and it might be part of living in a cyclical period of more extreme weather, such as the active Atlantic Hurricane period we're in now (which AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) believes is more likely cyclical than unstoppable Global Warming).
