HYPE: Tropical Storm Hits FL, South 100+

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist

I've decided to bring the Hype entries back, now that we're getting close to tropical storm season (or in it if you ask Andrea). The disclaimer is below, but the basic idea is to showcase the forecast model's craziest predictions by using graphics from our Pro site.

ABOUT THE HYPE: Use at your own risk! It's all for fun. Forecast Models predict outlandish things, which occasionally come true. By paying attention to the model hype on my blog, you may be praised as a master forecaster but more likely lambasted as the one who cried wolf. I generally only have time to look at the U.S. + Atlantic. This is just the hype; see other bloggers for pontification. All images from AccuWeather.com Professional. See other hype? Email me.

The model hype this week concerns (who else) the GFS. That model is predicting that a weak tropical storm (sub-1000mb / below 29.53") will cross Florida late next week.

According to the GFS, the storm will bring more than 5 inches of rain over the southern part of the state. The ECMWF European model does not foresee this situation, and the NAVY NOGAPS and WaveWatch III models do not forecast that far out, so we can't get their opinions.

The GFS is also hyped about a heat wave in Texas and the southeast on June 4th, with temperatures over 105 in southwest Texas and upper 90's across the Deep South.
