48 In. of Snow, -55 Degrees
Today is a day of extremes across the northern tier of the United states. As I alluded to yesterday, the coldest air of the season is here. At 10 AM Eastern time, here is a screencapture of the Top 10 Lowest RealFeel temperatures from our Pro site:
The first is Mount Washington [JessePedia], which is not a big surprise. #2 is Chisolm, Minnesota (PREMIUM | PRO), who currently sports a RealFeel temperature of -54 (-55 in the shade!).
Wind Chill advisories (PREMIUM | PRO) are in effect from Montana to New York.
Lake-effect snow is the other big story, as I explained yesterday. Houghton, Michigan picked up 17 inches in 24 hours yesterday.
Watch the Ontario Radar Loop (PREMIUM | PRO) today (which combines radar data from the U.S. and Canada, then delineates snow, ice and rain) to see the lake-effect snow bands progress. Below is a shot from 11 AM this morning:
We have issued a forecast map for this weekend, showing 48 inches of snow east of Lake Ontario and accumulating snow down to the Georgia border. It is a very rare event that allows us to issue a map showing a accumulations this high. In these sorts of situations, it's not unusual to see local areas get even more snow than is predicted on the map.
