2nd Coldest Temperature I've Ever Experienced
UPDATE: Here are some additional stats for the Northeast. Incredibly, four states were at or below -30 F, including almost two dozen stations in New York.
Lake Clear, NY: -37
Mud Creek, VT: -35
Mount Washington, NH: -35
Fryeburg, ME: -30
Oswayo, Pennsylvania: -24
Orange, MA: -22
These readings are far below anything seen this season, or for that matter, last winter. Plattsburgh, NY for example, only fell to -5 in the 2009-2010 season, and hadn't been below -4 this winter until they hit -13 yesterday and -22 this morning! We'll find out tomorrow how many records were broken, but there may not be a lot because the coldest temperatures last night weren't near populated areas.
ORIGINAL POST: Temperatures fell as low as -20 across Pennsylvania this morning, and for me it was the second coldest temperature that I have ever experienced.
Back on January 17, 2009, I blogged that I had experienced the coldest weather in my life, when my weather station here in State College, Pennsylvania, home of AccuWeather HQ [Google Map]. This morning, my thermometer got closer to that than I thought it would for years to come, at -13 degrees F.
Most local stations appeared to be a little warmer than their 2009 readings. Here are the low temperatures from Centre County electronic weather stations. (Numbers in parentheses are minimums from the Jan. 17, 2009 cold snap).
Jesse: -13 (-15)
Bellefonte: -13 (-17)
Carl E. (Tyrone): -10
AccuWeather HQ: -8
Corl Street: -7
Joe Bastardi: -7 (-8)
Lemont: -7 (-6)
Zed-X: -6
Woodycrest: -5
KUNV Airport: -5 (-4)
Elliot Abrams: -4 (-8)
Penn State: -3 (-3)
PSU Walker Building: -2 (-3)
Officially, Bradford, PA fell to -20 this morning -- but in 2009 the station was out of service after falling to -15. Later today, I'll have more amateur observations, and more information on how the two cold snaps' low temperatures compared. For now, check out some of the thermometer photos from the AccuWeather.com Facebook Fans:
Arctic sea smoke was even sighted in Massachusetts. How cold was it where you are? Leave me a Comment below or post to our Facebook Page.
