Heat to sizzle western US this week
Dangerous heat will continue to sizzle the western U.S. this week, peaking midweek in the Southwest but only gradually decreasing through the weekend.
Below are some model temperature forecasts for the next two days.
Max temperatures from GFS model Wednesday.
Max forecast temperatures from the GFS model on Wednesday.
Some locations will break records. Below are a few locations that will challenge, if not break, their daily record high temperature which is shown in parentheses.
Ontario, California on Tuesday (105) and Wednesday (106).
Redding, California on Thursday (110).
Tuscon, Arizona on Tuesday (109) and Wednesday (109).
Palm Springs, California on Tuesday (120) and Wednesday (119).
While Los Angeles will not be as hot as it was with the round of heat in early July, temperatures will still rise into the upper 90s Tuesday and Wednesday.
A ridge of high pressure aloft will be largely responsible for the heat. This feature will build westward over the Southwest through Wednesday.
While it will be centered over the Southwest, the ridge will extend northward into the Northwest bringing heat to Seattle and Portland and other inland areas. Afternoon temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s for both places.
For the Southwest, the heat looks to peak Wednesday as the upper-level ridge is forecast by the models to slightly weaken and move to the northeast later in the week and weekend.
However, it does not look like the heat will drop off rapidly. The heat looks slow to decrease so expect heat-related dangers to continue through most of the week.
The Northwest will be a different story though. The upper-level ridge is not expected to weaken much, if at all this week, and may actually strengthen over the weekend which would bring even hotter conditions to the region Saturday and Sunday.
Stay safe!
