Aurora Borealis Puts on a Show
The northern lights put on a show for many of us last night. One of the first reports of the northern lights came from Astronaut Scott Kelly. He was struck by how intense the aurora borealis was from his view aboard the International Space Station. And he was kind enough to share that view with the rest of the world.
Commander Kelly even shared a timelapse video! Check it out!
Reports started coming in from Scandinavia mid to late afternoon EDT on the 7th.
Another beauty from Finland
It was even visible near the major city of Stockholm, Sweden.
Soon, many people in the UK started snapping pictures of the Aurora. They were seen as far south as central parts of the UK.
The US and Canada were not left out. Reports of sightings came in from as far south as South Dakota, Iowa and New York state. The lights were very impressive on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as you can see here.
Even Iowa gets into the act as can be seen by the next photo.
The aurora was caused by a burst of the solar wind. We posted on the AccuWeather.com Astronomy Facebook page last week about a solar filament eruption. There was a worry that the coronal mass ejection from this would cause an even stronger geomagnetic storm. But, that CME missed, or we could have had an even more impressive show! Unfortunately, the sun looks to be very quiet for the next few days. But, we will be sure to let you know if that changes!
