Northeast: Extreme Cold Gone, but Rain on the Way

Monday morning

A southwesterly flow of mild air is affecting the Northeast today. A low pressure area from the Gulf states will spread rain to the area from Virginia (late today and this evening) to Maine (tomorrow morning). Meanwhile, a cold front from the Midwest will move east to be off the East coast tomorrow afternoon. The coldest air behind the front may hold temperatures in the teens in Chicago Wednesday, but the effect of the cold air mass will be much less as it reaches the I95 corridor. This video has more.

This map shows the southwest to northeast flow making it turn milder in the Northeast today, as well as a cold front crossing the Midwest.

This shows the extensive northwesterly flow of stinging Arctic air that was just coming in the I95 corridor at this time last week.

The cold will become noticeable in the Middle and North Atlantic states during next weekend or early next week, whether or not it actually rivals the frigid air mass that affected the area last week
