Extreme cold advances eastward
There were technical issues with today's video so yesterday's is below. The forecast is little changed, however. The leading edge of the true Arctic air is the cold front you see on the map below. There is a line of snow squalls accompanying the front which moved through the middle of Pennsylvania at midmorning. Assuming it holds together this afternoon, people in its path wll experience darkening skies of the West and then a brief period of heavy snow with very poor visibility. Historically, serious accidents have occurred with this type of squall. Once the Arctic cold front move offshore, it will be windy and much colder with temperatures dropping to the single digits all the way to the I-95 Corridor tonight and again tomorrow night. Amazingly, a massive warming trend will occur later in the weekend and next week. Some computer models suggest that temperatures from the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic states could climb to 50 or even 60°.
Snow will spread into much of the Northeasttoday except from the I95 corridor to the coast, where it may rain at first and change to snow at the end tonight. Bitterly cold Arctic air will follow.
