An ongoing winter storm is expected to significantly disrupt travel and could become the most impactful winter storm in several years. Steady snow will continue into Sunday evening before some sleet will mix in over part of the area Sunday night. By Monday morning, the storm is expected to taper off to a few flurries. A total of 8 inches of snow plus some sleet is forecast in the city with amounts to near 1 foot just outside of the five boroughs, especially north and west. Well north and west of the city, 12-18 inches will pile up where sleet does not mix in. Streets and highways will be snow packed and slippery throughout the storm and into Monday for a time in the storm's wake. Frigid air following the system is expected to limit natural melting for several days.
