While the Chicago area will remain on the northwestern fringe of a massive storm with snow and ice in the southern and eastern United States this weekend, Lake Michigan will add enough moisture for highly variable snow accumulations. Up to 8 inches of snow is forecast to pile up downtown with 1-3 inches of snow to fall around O'Hare. Locally higher amounts are likely inland of the southwestern edge Lake Michigan into Sunday evening. Given the frigid conditions, most ice-melting compounds may be ineffective. Roads will be packed with snow and slippery as a result.
