It's not difficult to find great things to do when you are visiting Istanbul. The real trick is choosing what to do and what you’ll have to save for another time. This list will offer you suggestions for the best things to do when visiting Istanbul so that you can be sure to have the most enjoyable trip possible.

Visit the Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque certainly qualifies as a "must-see" destination. The mosque is a fabulous structure that was constructed in 1616 by Ahmed I and his tomb resides inside. The blue tiles on the front wall of the mosque make it appear as if it is bathed in blue after the lights come on at night, an absolutely stunning sight to behold.

The Blue Mosque is still in use today and you might be able to see things like an active hospice (care facility) or madrasah (college) during your visit. Just remember to be respectful at all of these sights as they are still of sacred and religious importance.

Cruise on the Bosphorus

Many people agree that one thing that you must do when you visit Turkey is take a cruise on the Bosphorus. This waterway is also known as "The Strait of Istanbul," and it separates Anatolia from Thrace. The cruise will not disappoint as it takes you along the strait because you will be treated to fantastic views of Asia and Europe.

Marvel at the Hagia Sophia

This mosque was an Eastern Orthodox cathedral when it was completed in 537 AD. The building is remarkable for its architectural design because there hadn't been a building quite like it up until then. At the time of its building, it was the largest edifice in the world and kept that title until 1520.

Inside, you will find spectacular visions of marble and gold. Like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia is also known for its lights. When you walk into the nave, you will see that the lights are being reflected all around you, and this makes it look as if you are hovering above ground.

Take in the Topkapi Palace

The Topkapi Palace is a marvelous example of impressive architecture and rivals the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in beauty and grandeur. The Topkapi Palace is also home to highly religious and royal artifacts like Holy Relics of the Prophet Muhammad, the royal treaure, and the imperial archives.

One of the sights that you will not want to miss is the Royal Gardens that are located on the property grounds. The Topkapi Palace was converted into a museum at the end of the Ottoman reign and the museum contains many articles from the time of the Ottoman Empire, including armor, Ottoman clothing, religious relics, illuminated manuscripts, and weapons.

Galata Tower, Istanbul

Enjoy the Galata Tower

The Galata Tower is a stone tower that was built in 1348 and stands nine stories high and offers visitors a sweeping view of the city of Istanbul. When you visit this tower, you must not miss the chance to have a meal at the top floor restaurant where you can enjoy the sensational view. There is even a nightclub on the upper floors that showcases Turkish shows.

The Tower is where the first "flying Turk" flew over the strait and landed safely on the Asian side. The flying Turk, Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi, learned how birds fly and made bird wings for himself so that he could take his trip across the strait in the 17th century. This was a trip that lasted for approximately four miles! While you probably won’t be able to fly the same strait with your own bird wings, you can still enjoy your trip to this tower.

Taste Istanbul Cuisine

If you are concerned about the food in Istanbul, stop. The cuisine in Istanbul is a melting pot of several types of food, so you are sure to find something that you will enjoy. Some foods you might recognize that are native to Istanbul and the surrounding region are kebabs, baklava, and sucukli yumurta.

Food is always one of the best ways to experience another culture and Istanbul’s food will not disappoint. With deliciously seasoned meat, heavenly flavored desserts, perfectly roasted vegetables, and much more, you’ll be sure to find something you’ll love.

What to Expect with Istanbul Weather

Istanbul is covered by fog most mornings throughout the entire year, though it usually dissipates by noon. The temperature reaches an average 84 degrees, but in the summer, the humidity will make it feel a lot warmer. The summer months also have the most thunderstorms, but the storm season only lasts for about 15 days.

Winters tend to be on the cold side with an average low of 39 degrees with some snow when temperatures drop.

The best time of year for weather conditions and temperature is Spring. Spring has moderate temperatures, limited humidity, and moderate weather conditions. If you choose to go in the Spring, you’ll be getting Turkey’s finest and be able to enjoy your trip so much more.
