Storms to bring flooding, damaging winds from Plains to Northeast into next week

Flooding downpours, damaging wind gusts and hail will target parts of the Plains and Northeast into next week as a potent dip in the jet stream moves east.

Severe thunderstorms drenched much of the Northeast on Aug. 20, but parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York were hit especially hard.

An active weather setup across the United States will fuel severe thunderstorms and flooding across portions of the Plains, Midwest, mid-Atlantic and Northeast into next week. This comes just days after a large complex of storms produced tornadoes from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.

South winds will transport abundant Atlantic moisture into the East, fueling flooding downpours. The greatest risk of flooding will be roughly along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor, stretching from eastern North Carolina through New Jersey and into southeastern Massachusetts. An elevated flooding risk will also extend into northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania.

"Since August has been wet and the soil is already saturated in some areas, additional showers and storms can easily produce run-off into poor drainage areas and lower-lying spots. Heavy rainfall rates can also lead to standing water on some roads," AccuWeather Meteorologist Chad Merrill said.

Severe thunderstorms to target Ohio Valley, Northeast

On Saturday, strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across portions of the Ohio Valley and Northeast through the evening hours. Flooding downpours, hail and damaging wind gusts between 55 to 65 miles per hour will be the main hazards. Detroit, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are among the cities at risk.

Thunderstorms will continue across Michigan and Ohio during the afternoon before tracking east toward the Appalachians during the evening. Downpours, hail, damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning could disrupt outdoor activities across the region.

Farther north and west, showers and thunderstorms are forecast across much of the Great Lakes. A few of the stronger storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Waterspouts will also be possible over the lakes.

On Sunday, the storm system is will move east across much of the Northeast. Although the severe weather threat is not expected to be as widespread as Saturday, stronger thunderstorms could still produce gusty winds and small hail. A few lake-effect rain showers could also develop near the Great Lakes.

Cooler and less humid air will spread south behind the storm system Sunday afternoon and evening. Drier weather will follow across much of the region for the start of the new week.

Severe thunderstorms to target Great Plains Monday

Additional rounds of thunderstorms are expected across northern portions of the Great Plains on Monday. Localized damaging wind gusts and hail will be the main hazards. Downpours and strong winds could lead to travel disruptions during the Monday evening commute.
