Severe storms to pester parts of Midwest and East into Saturday night

Storm damage reports are coming in from Virginia up through Pennsylvania and into Delaware after severe and tornado-warned storms throughout the evening of Aug. 20.

Thunderstorms and severe weather will occur across the central and eastern United States through the end of the week, disrupting travel, outdoor plans and daily routines.

On Thursday, severe thunderstorms rumbled from Arkansas to the mid-Atlantic, bringing damaging winds, flash flooding and some hail. A tornado in Dover, Delaware, downed trees and power lines and damaged multiple structures, prompting a state of emergency.

On Friday, thunderstorms brought widespread reports of severe winds across the Southeast, spanning from eastern Texas to North Carolina. A separate area of severe weather affected western Nebraska, where 3-inch hail was reported near Moomaws. A brief tornado was also reported in Lee County in northern Illinois.

This weekend

Additional rounds of downpours and thunderstorms are likely this weekend across parts of the central and eastern U.S. Some of the activity will focus near and south of a pocket of cool air around the Great Lakes. Cities at risk for some of the feisty storm activity include Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Buffalo, New York, and Charleston, West Virginia.

Another area of storms will develop along a slow-moving or stalled front near the Atlantic Coast.

When storms approach airports, flight delays are likely until the all-clear is given.

The storms can impact outdoor events such as ballgames, sports and band camps, as well as automobile racing.
