Midwest, East at risk for damaging storms and flash flooding into Friday
Rounds of severe weather and torrential downpours will roll from parts of the Midwest to portions of the Atlantic Coast through at least Friday. Expect power outages and travel disruptions.
Parts of the Midwest and the eastern United States will be primed for multiple rounds of thunderstorms capable of severe weather and flash flooding into Friday.
Individual and large complexes of storms will erupt and roll around the northern and eastern edge of a heat dome anchored over the south-central U.S. this week.
The storms may not be confined to the traditional afternoon and evening hours. Some locations can experience multiple storms and multiple episodes of severe weather, ranging from high wind gusts and torrential downpours each day.
Where the storms approach and pass through airport hubs, ground stops, flight delays and cancellations may result. Just north of the thunderstorm zones, there is potential for localized flash flooding each day due to repeated downpours. Not only will small streams rapidly rise, but there can be surges along some of the rivers in the region as well.
Storms to pummel Midwest, mid-Atlantic Thursday
Thursday's severe weather threat will focus on two main areas: the Midwest and the East.
Storms that roll from southern Manitoba into eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota to northeastern Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin during the afternoon and evening will bring the risk of damaging wind gusts and hail, as well as flooding downpours.
Minneapolis is among the major Midwest cities at risk for severe weather on Thursday. Severe storms are also forecast for Milwaukee and could reach Chicago.
Farther east, severe storms are forecast from Thursday to Thursday night from southern Michigan and northern Indiana to coastal waters off New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.
The main threats on Thursday will range from damaging wind gusts and flash flooding and include the metro areas of Detroit; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Morgantown, West Virginia; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Dover, Delaware; New York City, Baltimore; and Washington, D.C.

Severe storms to close out week
Severe weather from Friday to Friday night is forecast to extend from Ohio to North Carolina and coastal waters off southern New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
Similar to Thursday, the greatest threats will come from powerful wind gusts and flash flooding. The AccuWeather Local StormMax™ wind gust is 80 mph.
More rounds of storms are likely to affect parts of the Midwest and southern Appalachians and the lower mid-Atlantic zone during the Labor Day weekend. Some severe storms are forecast for the Carolinas on Saturday.
Those heading to the beach or camping are urged to monitor the weather for rapidly changing conditions as storms approach. When on the beach or at the golf course, lightning strikes can occur well ahead of downpours. Rapid flooding can occur along small streams from storms miles away in the mountains.
