Tropical Storm Vance forms in eastern Pacific, to approach southwest Mexico coast as a major hurricane
Following Polo, Simon, Rachel and Trudy, forecasters are tracking a new storm that could evolve into a major hurricane as it tracks toward Mexico.
Satellite imagery from NOAA shows clouds swirling around the eye of Super Typhoon Champi as the storm moved across the northwestern Pacific on Oct. 19-20. The storm is forecast to move towards Taiwan.
Mexico's Pacific coast is facing yet another tropical threat as Tropical Storm Vance approaches in the coming days, following a similar track as Trudy did earlier in October.
Residents and businesses across western Mexico should closely monitor the progress of Vance, AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva warned. The exact track of the storm will play an important role in determining the severity of impacts to western Mexico, or whether the storm remains offshore entirely.
Vance is forecast to quickly ramp up to a hurricane and is likely to become a major Category 3 storm with sustained winds of at least 111 mph.
Even if Vance remains offshore, hurricanes that remain offshore can still bring heavy rain, rough surf and gusty winds to Mexico’s Pacific coast, so residents are urged to closely monitor the situation.
As Vance intensifies, factors like wind shear, steering winds and other systems in the proximity may influence the exact track this storm takes in the coming week.
Direct impacts along the southern Mexico shoreline are forecast given the current track, similar to recent storms in the 2026 hurricane season.
Depending on how strong each factor is and how they contribute to the progression of the future track, some leftover tropical moisture could even move into Texas and Oklahoma next week.
