As Hurricane Lala passed south of Hawaii, damaging winds and heavy rainfall spread across the Hawaiian Islands. The unusual hurricane impacts were most serious across the Big Island (Hawaii County) and parts of Maui County, where heavy rain falling at the rate of almost 5 inches per hour resulted in catastrophic flooding and mudslides in the steep terrain. Additionally, widespread wind gusts of 60-80 mph downed trees and powerlines. The combination of these impacts resulted in all roads leading in and out of some communities being completed blocked.
AccuWeather issues a track forecast for a developing Tropical Rainstorm ahead of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and all other known sources
At 6 a.m. ET on August 12, 2026, AccuWeather’s Hurricane Experts issued an Eye Path® forecast to AccuWeather For Business customers for a developing tropical rainstorm expected to move toward Hawaii, bringing damaging winds and flooding rainfall. This was FIVE hours BEFORE the NHC and all other known sources issued a track and intensity forecast for what would become Hurricane Lala.
