Fitow made landfall as a typhoon in eastern China near the border of south Zhejiang and northern Fujian Provinces early Monday, local time.
The center of Fitow passed just to the south of the Ryukyu Islands earlier on Saturday, and north of Taiwan on Sunday and Sunday night with torrential downpours and some damaging winds. More than 300 mm (12 inches) of rain fell in the higher terrain of Taiwan over the weekend, including more than 500 mm (20 inches) in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County.
Naha Airport, located on the southern part of Okinawa Island, recorded tropical storm force winds over 75 kph (up to 50 mph) and over 125 mm (5 inches) of rain from Fitow.
Heavy rain fell from Fujian Province northward through Shanghai as Fitow continued inland and weakened. Rainfall totaled more than 400 mm (16 inches) in Rui'an, China. Around 8 inches fell in Fuding, with over 6 inches falling in a six-hour time period.
More than 8 inches of rainfall was also reported in Hangzhou, while farther north in Shanghai more than 2 inches of rain has fallen from Fitow.
Now that Fitow is inland, the storm has rapidly weakened; however, areas of flooding rainfall will be a concern into Tuesday near Shanghai.
The Korean Peninsula will face a double threat early this week. First, the moisture from Typhoon Fitow will be pulled northward across the region by a trough to the north. Secondly, Typhoon Danas currently moving through the Ryukyu Islands will be pulled northward between Korean and Japan by the same trough.
The combination of moisture from both of these typhoons will result in a deluge of rainfall for parts of the Korean Peninsula, leading to the threat for life-threatening flooding and mudslides. Damaging winds will also be a concern as Danas is expected to track near or just southeast of the southern coast of South Korea Tuesday into Tuesday night.
