The weather for racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Coca-Cola 600 this weekend will be free of rain.

Showers and thunderstorms swept through the Charlotte area Friday midday and targeted areas to the south and east Friday afternoon.

Drier weather has returned and should hold through Sunday.

A shower or thunderstorm will develop in southwestern North Carolina, upstate South Carolina and Georgia Sunday afternoon. The storms can be slow moving and drop heavy rain.

However, at this time it appears rain will hold off for racing Sunday evening at the speedway, located just north of metro Charlotte, North Carolina.

Temperatures at the start of the race will be near 80 F, but will fall through the 70s and into the 60s during Sunday evening.

The Coca-Cola 600 is scheduled to start at approximately 6:00 p.m. EDT, Sunday, May 25, 2014, after the conclusion of the Indianapolis 500. There is also the Grand Prix de Monaco at Monte-Carlo, so race fans will have plenty to watch this weekend.

The greater opportunity for a shower or thunderstorm around Charlotte will come on Memorial Day.
