After several disruptions, rain finally halted attempts to finish the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in Bristol, Tennessee, on Sunday. The race has been postponed until Monday.

Officials threw the red flag due to weather three times on Sunday before finally deciding to postpone the race until 1 p.m. EDT on Monday.

On Saturday, NASCAR and track officials moved up the start time of the race to 1 p.m. ET due to the threat of inclement weather in Bristol.

The Food City 500 was originally set to begin at 2:13 p.m. ET, according to NASCAR.

"Rain arrived at midday Sunday and forced track officials to employ track drying procedures," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.

The same storm that threaten other parts of the Southeast with severe weather and blizzard conditions in the Upper Midwest this past weekend was responsible for the wet weather.

"A couple of rain, ice and snow showers will still be around on Monday in Bristol," Pydynowski said. "The occasional wet weather could lead to some delays, but odds are good that they will be able to complete the race."

Monday will otherwise be a mostly cloudy, breezy and much colder day with highs around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The wind will create even lower AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures, meaning spectators will definitely want to bundle up.

Similar weather delays occurred last year at Bristol, when heavy rain forced the Food City 500 to be moved from its originally scheduled day on Sunday, April 23, to Monday, April 24.

This weekend’s race is the first of two that are held at Bristol Motor Speedway every year. The famed night race will be held in August.
