Wet Start to Formula 1 Season in Melbourne

The 2014 season of Formula 1 racing is underway this weekend in Melbourne, Australia.

Practice sessions already took place Friday with plenty of sunshine and high temperature of 28 C (82 F).

An approaching cold front will bring a passing shower or two on Saturday when qualifying will take place.

Fans and drivers will avoid the heaviest rainfall which is expected Saturday night as the front moves through the region.

Rain will continue into Sunday morning as pre-race activities begin; however, by the start of the race, just a lingering shower or two is expected.

Behind the front, temperatures will only rise to near 20 C (68 F) during the race which could pose handling issues for the drivers who practice and qualify in much warmer conditions.

Following the race in Melbourne, Formula 1 will take a week off before the second race of the season takes place in Kuala Lumpur the last weekend in March.
