Millions faced disruptive snow and ice as a monster winter storm blanketed the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Quick bursts of snow covered roads and caused them to quickly become slick and snow-covered, leading to treacherous conditions and traffic slowdowns.

Two people died in a car crash during the storm in Pemberton, New Jersey, about 30 miles east of Philadelphia, according to the Associated Press. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A fatal accident was also reported in Kansas on Wednesday, the AP reported. A 67-year-old woman died when she reportedly lost control of her vehicle in snowy and icy conditions.

Syracuse University men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim was involved in car accident in which he struck and killed a pedestrian along Interstate 690 near Syracuse Wednesday night. The victim, 51-year-old Jorge Jimenez, was outside his vehicle ater being in an unrelated accident due to weather, according to ESPN.

Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack said in a statement that Boeheim is in contact with the local authorities and cooperating fully.

School closures and travel delays were widespread on Wednesday morning as snow ramped up across the region. Snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour were observed from south-central Pennsylvania into northwestern Virginia with occasional thundersnow.

The state department of transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike set speed and commercial vehicle restrictions that went into effect 6 a.m. EST Wednesday. This restriction was lifted around 6 a.m. Thursday.

A full commercial vehicle ban, including buses, was in place on Interstate 70 in Fulton County from the Maryland line to the turnpike; on I-99 from I-80 to the turnpike; and on I-80 from I-79 to the I-99 interchange.

Freezing rain caused travel concerns along I-80 from central and eastern Pennsylvania into northern New Jersey Wednesday night into Thursday.

Over 1,500 flights were canceled at airports across the northeastern and midwestern United States with hundreds of delays, according to FlightStats.
