One of the biggest storms so far this winter dumped feet of snow over parts of New England, bringing travel to a halt and closing schools across the region.

Whiteout conditions and gusty winds caused officials in New Hampshire and Maine to urge people stay off the roads and remain at home. Some towns, such as Waldoboro, Maine, suspended all snow plow operations due to the hazardous conditions.

“The heaviest snow fell across northern Massachusetts, eastern New Hampshire and eastern Maine with many towns across Maine digging out from 20 plus inches of snow,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyson Hoegg said.

Cary, Maine, experienced some of the harshest conditions, receiving over 30 inches of snow in under 24 hours.

The storm brought a whopping 40 inches of snow to Glenburn, Bradford and Hudson, Maine. Drifts in Sherman, Maine, reached 8 feet deep.

While heavy snowfall led to major disruptions across eastern New England, the system responsible for the snow also brought strong winds to the entire region.

Winds as strong as 70 mph on the back side of the storm led to widespread travel disruptions across the northeastern United States, including areas that did not see any snow from this storm.

More than 1,000 flights were canceled at airports across the region, including over 350 at Boston’s Logan International Airport and over 275 at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

People across New England will only have a short break to dig out from the early-week storm before another snowstorm takes aim at the region.
