While nearly a month has passed since a typhoon roamed the western Pacific Ocean, more tropical activity is possible through the end of October.

A tropical depression formed in the western South China Sea on Sunday night, local time, pushing heavy, tropical downpours into the island of Hainan and into northern Vietnam through Tuesday. Despite weakening once moving inland, flooding downpours could reach northern Thailand and Myanmar through the middle of the week.

In the wake of this depression, there are signs for more development in the middle of October.

“We typically look to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) to help spin up tropical systems in the western Pacific Ocean,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

“This area of enhanced upward motion that moves across the globe has recently been weak and located over the Indian Ocean,” Douty said. “However, we are seeing the MJO move into the western Pacific during the middle to latter part of the month, and that may lead to more development.”

“There are signs that additional tropical development may occur during the second half of this week across the South China Sea or Philippine Sea,” Douty said.

These potential systems could threaten areas from the Philippines to Taiwan late in the week if development occurs.

Locations from China into Vietnam and Laos should also be alert for potential tropical impacts by this weekend from these tropical threats.

All residents of the western Pacific Basin from the Philippines to Vietnam, China and Japan are encouraged to take the time now to review what precautions would need to be taken in the event a tropical storm or typhoon threatens.
