Wet and stormy weather threatens to disrupt holiday plans from the Eastern Seaboard to the Gulf Coast, as well as across the Great Lakes on Memorial Day.

Wet end to the holiday weekend in the eastern U.S.

Residents of the Midwest, mid-Atlantic and New England should bring an umbrella and a sweatshirt to any Memorial Day celebrations.

Monday’s weather will be quite cool and wet in eastern New York and New England with rain and highs only in the 50s and lower 60s F. This includes in Boston, where a high around 70 F is more common at the end of May.

Memorial Day May 28 PM

"Memorial Day may be the coolest in New York City since 2004," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Samuhel said.

Cooler air flowing in from the Atlantic Ocean is likely to create a sharp gradient between cloudy, cool and dreary weather in New York City and New Jersey and some sunshine and warmth to the west.

While temperatures will fail or struggle to climb out of the 60s in New Jersey, temperatures will rise into the lower 80s in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.

For those determined to head to the beach despite the clouds and spotty drizzle, be mindful of the chilly ocean conditions.

Hypothermia can occur in any water temperature below 70, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Highs in the 50s and lower 60s are expected from Minnesota to northern Michigan, where a breeze will create lower AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures. Highs will otherwise average in the middle 70s in Chicago and Detroit.

Disruptive storms in store for Gulf Coast

“Widespread showers and locally severe storms will interfere with barbecues and picnics from the Gulf Coast into the Carolinas,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said.

In addition to finding shelter in a sturdy building during any storms, partygoers should take care to secure outdoor furniture and other objects ahead of any storms to limit damage.

More agreeable weather will be found in the aptly named Sunshine State.

“The best area to escape the wet weather could be the Florida Peninsula, with dry conditions likely in Orlando, Tampa and Daytona Beach,” said Pydynowski.

Dry and warm weather in the West

High pressure is expected to maintain warm but dry conditions in the West, contrasting most of the nation.

“Any rainfall chances should be isolated to the mountains during the afternoon and evening,” said Pydynowski.

Otherwise, consistently calm and sunny weather will promote above-average temperatures and a promise of uninterrupted holiday celebrations.
