Mediterranean storm to bring rain, wind to the Balkans through Sunday
A storm will spread rain and wind through the Balkans with downpours grazing southern Italy into Sunday.
“Heavy rain across the western Balkans can quickly lead to flash flooding, as these areas had rounds of rainfall in recent weeks,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Maura Kelly.
Rainfall amounts of 50 to 100 mm (2 to 4 inches) will be possible where the heaviest rain falls.
The most likely locations to endure heavy rainfall and an elevated risk for flooding will be southern Greece.
Given that some of these areas have already received heavy rainfall this autumn, the saturated ground may make it easier for low-lying areas to flood. Trees may be prone to falling, even in lesser wind gusts.
While winds may be gusty in some areas, especially along the coast, the storm is not forecast to reach the strength of a “medicane,” which is a hurricanelike cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea.
Wind speeds are forecast to reach 55 km/h (35 mph) in some areas, especially along coastal areas and across higher elevations. Higher gusts up to 80 km/h (50 mph) are possible.
In addition to the potential for downed tree limbs, residents should secure loose objects that can blow around in gusty winds.

In addition to the rain and wind from the storm, the clouds and reduced visibility that the storm brings will make viewing this weekend’s Leonid meteor shower more difficult.
As the storm expands northward and eastward through the weekend, clouds and precipitation will expand elsewhere across eastern Europe and into Turkey.
At the same time this storm is impacting parts of the Mediterranean, a large surge of cold air will rush southwestward through central and eastern Europe.
As the moisture moves into the colder air, some snow will break out across the higher terrain of central Greece and southern Albania.
While the autumn months have proved to be stormy along the central and eastern Mediterranean coast, a switch to drier weather is likely on the way in the coming weeks and months.
