Another major winter storm will strike areas from Afghanistan to Pakistan and northern India into Saturday following weeks of unsettled weather.

One of the strongest storms of the season caused at least 26 fatalities due to flooding in Pakistan last week.

Flooding will once again be a concern as a storm brings heavy rain, thunderstorms and heavy mountain snowfall to the region through Saturday.

The heaviest snow will fall from central and northern Afghanistan into far northern Pakistan and India.

Widespread snowfall of 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) will be common, with up to 75 cm (30 inches) in parts of central Afghanistan.

This threat includes Kabul, where the heaviest snowfall is expected into Saturday.

In the lower elevations of southern Afghanistan and northern and western Pakistan, a period of locally heavy rainfall is expected.

Rain will continue across Islamabad and Lahore into Saturday, bringing the risk for flooding.

Islamabad and surrounding areas will be at the greatest risk for flooding and mudslides as rainfall of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) falls across the region.

Showers and thunderstorms will sweep into southeastern Iran and southern Pakistan Friday afternoon before spreading into northwestern India on Saturday.

The heaviest rainfall is forecast to remain north of Karachi and New Delhi; however, both locations will be at risk for a shower or thunderstorm.

A shower or thunderstorm is possible in Karachi both Friday and Saturday while the risk in New Delhi will occur from late Saturday into Sunday.

North and west of Karachi, there will be the potential for locally severe thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding, damaging winds and hail on Saturday.

A period of more tranquil weather is expected to settle over the region during the first half of next week.
