Stormy weather returns to Delhi, northern India late this week

Severe weather pounded New Delhi and surrounding parts of northern India last week, and another round of stormy weather will continue to rumble through Friday.
Both large hail and a tornado were reported in the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, Feb. 7, and the region is enduring yet another stretch of unsettled weather.
Thunderstorms returned to New Delhi this Thursday morning, causing domestic carrier flights to be diverted, according to the Times of India.
Additional showers and thunderstorms will rumble across much of northern India into Friday. This includes the NCR, Uttar Pradesh and eastern Madhya Pradesh.
Thunderstorms can also press to parts of Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to end the week.
"The thunderstorms can lead to more disruptions to airline passengers," according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski. "Any downpours will reduce visibility for motorists, and drivers should also remain alert for slick roads where it has not rained recently."
The slippery conditions can develop when rain mixes with oil residue from vehicles during the dry spell.
As was the case last week, a few of the thunderstorms may produce hail and strong winds.
The risk of these stronger thunderstorms is expected to focus on communities from Agra, Lucknow and Gorakhpur to Nagpur on Friday. Most of these violent thunderstorms can be expected in the afternoon and early evening hours.
Another round of thunderstorms can rumble the NCR, but most of the stronger thunderstorms may erupt to the east.
"Even in the absence of hail and gusty winds, residents are reminded to seek shelter as soon as thunder is heard," Pydynowski added. "You are then close enough to be struck by lightning."
The thunderstorms will continue to press eastward from Friday evening to Sunday.
On Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected from Odisha and Chhattisgarh to northeastern India. Once again, the risk for hail and damaging winds will exist around eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The threat zone includes Patna.
The unsettled weather will continue across northeastern India on Sunday.
While thunderstorms threaten areas farther south, Jammu and Kashmir will again be at risk for heavy snowfall into Friday.
New travel disruptions and avalanches will be possible across the region, which suffered from deadly avalanches each of the past two weeks.
A brief period of tranquil weather is expected across northwestern India from Saturday into Sunday morning before another storm brings the risk for rain and high elevation snowfall to areas north of the NCR.
