Alcide to stir rough surf along Madagascar coast into early week
Alcide, the first named storm of the 2018-2019 southwest Indian Ocean cyclone season, will stir rough seas along the Madagascar coast into early week.
This tropical threat will remain over the open ocean through Monday, creating rough seas across the region.
The formation of Alcide marks an early start to the tropical season in the southwestern Indian Ocean, as the normal start date is Nov. 15.
Alcide rapidly strengthened since forming at midweek, peaking on Thursday with winds equal to a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.
Alcide has since weakened into a tropical depression.
The heaviest rainfall and strongest winds will remain over the open ocean; however, occasional gusty squalls will occur across northeast Madagascar.
Despite weakening, rough seas and surf will continue to affect eastern Madagascar, as well as the northern-facing coasts of Reunion and Mauritius through at least Monday.
A turn toward the northwest is expected, taking Alcide north of Madagascar Tuesday as it continues to weaken and eventually dissipates.
Alcide is expected to remain north of Madagascar during this time, sparing the country from a direct hit.
