The 207th annual Oktoberfest kicked off on Saturday, 16 September, with rain and unseasonably chilly air.

Chilly and damp conditions will hold through the first half of the week for Oktoberfest in Munich.

Festivalgoers planning on attending Oktoberfest activities through Wednesday will need a jacket and will also want to pack an umbrella.

The unseasonably chilly air that built across Germany over the weekend will continue with high temperatures struggling to reach 12 C (54 F) on Tuesday for Family Day and 14 C (57 F) on Wednesday.

These high temperatures will be 6 to 8 C (10 to 15 F) below normal for the middle of September. Mornings will be even colder with overnight low temperatures around 6 C (43 F) in Munich into Wednesday.

The cold air combined with several weak storm systems rotating through the region will bring clouds and showers to most of Germany, including Munich.

Attendees will want to keep their umbrellas handy as showers will pass through at various times each day. A steady, long-duration rain is not expected, so there will be some dry time between showers.

Any passing shower can make grassy areas slippery and muddy, so folks will want to use extra caution.

Drier weather may try to build in on Thursday and Friday, and temperatures could start to creep back closer to normal, making for more pleasant weather for Oktoberfest.

The dry spell is not expected to last long as the threat for showers will return this weekend.

While the first Oktoberfest was held entirely in October, the start of the festival was eventually moved into September in an attempt to take advantage of the nicer weather. Oktoberfest will run through 3 October this year.
