A powerful earthquake shook the Philippines, bringing the threat for a tsunami in areas around the location of the quake.
The magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck early Saturday morning local time with the epicenter of the earthquake occurring 19 miles (31 km) WSW of Balangonan, Philippines, the USGS said.
"Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km of the earthquake epicenter," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement shortly after the earthquake occurred.
The center warned that tsunami waves of 1 to 3 feet were possible for some coasts of the Philippines, while tsunami waves less than 1 foot were possible for some coasts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau and Yap.
At 5:51 a.m. local time Saturday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued their final statement, saying that there is no longer the threat for a tsunami. However, some minor sea level fluctuations may still occur in areas near the epicenter.
The earthquake was originally reported by the USGS as a magnitude 7.2, but was later downgraded to a magnitude 6.8.
