In a celebration of AccuWeather's 50th Anniversary, an event was held on Thursday, Sept., 12. AccuWeather CEO Barry Myers, Chief Operating Officer Evan Myers, and company founder and President Joel Myers talk about the last 50 years and where they are looking for the future.

"As we celebrate on our 50th year, we reflect on our illustrious history, the adventure that brought us here and our bright future that lies ahead," AccuWeather Founder Dr. Joel Myers said, beginning his speech during a celebration of AccuWeather's 50th anniversary on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

While still a graduate student at Penn State, he founded AccuWeather in November of 1962.

"They said it could not be done," Myers said. "I was told again and again, I could not sell what is already freely available from newspapers to TV and radio. I tried to explain that we could produce forecasts that were more accurate and more beneficial to clients' needs."

Myers called 25,000 prospects before reaching his goal of 100 paying clients.

Today, AccuWeather serves 90 newspaper, 800 radio and 200 television and network clients. One billion people a day depend on weather forecasts and information from AccuWeather.

"It was a rough sell, but I persevered and I never gave up," Myers said.

Through the years, AccuWeather's mission has been to save lives protect property and to help people prosper.

"Our severe weather center and enterprise solution clients, which include 63 of the Fortune 100 and 54 of the Fortune Global 100, get tornado warnings an average of 24 minutes before a tornado strikes. On average, twice the lead average lead time from other sources. Our false alarm rate on tornado warnings is 11 percent. The average false alarm rate of others is 79 percent," Myers said.
