Both NASA GISS and NOAA have released their global surface temperature data for August 2017.
August 2017 ranked as the second warmest August on record for global land/ocean combined surface temperatures despite near-neutral ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) conditions. Records go back to 1880.
The warmest August on record occurred in 2016 (+0.99), which was partially influenced by the warming from El Nino.
August 2017 averaged 0.85 degrees C. above the 1951-1980 average. However, August 2017 was 0.20 deg. C. warmer than the August following the last large El Nino event of 1997-1998.

August 2017 ranked as the third warmest August on record behind 2016 and 2015 for global land/ocean surface combined, averaging 0.83 deg. C. above the 20th century average. Records go back to 1880.
Nine of the 10 highest average global temperature departures from August have occurred since 2005.
August 2017 was the 41st consecutive August and 392nd consecutive month with an above normal global temperature.
In terms of the global oceans, August 2017 ranked as the fourth warmest on record. Again, during near-neutral ENSO conditions.
The last five years are among the top five years with the highest global temperatures on record.
The June-August period was the third warmest on record globally, following 2016 and 2015.
This was the third warmest summer on record for the Northern Hemisphere and the third warmest winter for the Southern Hemisphere.
So far, the January-August 2017 period is the second warmest on record behind 2016.
NOAA scientists predict that 2017 will likely end up as the third warmest year on record globally coming behind 2016 and 2015.
