Update on Snowstorms Into the Weekend

2/12/2015, 10:29:41 AM

Southeastern Newfoundland is currently having blizzard conditions, including the St. John's area. Latest observations also indicate hurricane-force wind gusts at Cape Race. I still expect at least 30 cm for the Avalon Peninsula into this evening with drifts five times higher than that.

The second storm system coming up toward Nova Scotia later tonight and Friday will indeed end up a little farther to the east than what we thought yesterday. In response to this shift in the track, we confined the 15-30 cm area to the extreme eastern portion of Nova Scotia and now have the Halifax area in the 8-15 cm range. This same storm should bring around 8-12 cm to St. John's, NL, later Friday afternoon and evening as it moves quickly by.

More on the weekend storm later, but latest indications are that the brunt of the expected blizzard will be across the northern/west two-thirds of Nova Scotia, PEI and southern New Brunswick.
