Eight Lions players knelt during the anthem prior to Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons. Owner Martha Ford stood on the sideline, holding hands with coach Jim Caldwell in a show of solidarity. Even the anthem singer took a knee at the end of The Star Spangled Banner.
On Friday, in a sharply critical anti-NFL speech, President Donald Trump said he wished owners would "fire" players who knelt during the anthem. He later doubled down with even more criticism on twitter. Ford, other NFL owners, and commissioner Roger Goodell released statements, supporting the players for their right to protest.
After Sunday's Lions game, Fox 2's Hilary Golston spoke with fans about the protest.
