POST-RALLY CHAOS: Pepper spray used as protests outside Trump rally turn violent

Phoenix Police officials said officers deployed pepper sprays and pepper balls outside the Phoenix Convention Center, following President Donald Trump's rally.

According to a news conference held by Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams and other city officials late Tuesday night, a group apparently threw gas at officers.

Four arrests were reportedly made, in connection with the protests, including two for aggravated assault, one for criminal damage and another on an unrelated warrant.

"Officers were forced to protect themselves to protect the community and protect property, and they did so successfully and professionally," Chief Williams said. "We did deploy pepper balls and gas to get people moving through the area."

Phoenix Police officials said officers did not use rubber bullets during the incident.

According to an earlier statement issued by Sgt. Jonathan Howard with Phoenix Police, people in the crowd began throwing rocks and bottles at police, and also dispersed some gas in the area. Police then responded with pepper balls and OC sprays, in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Earlier in the night, protesters have engaged in minor scuffles and shouting matches with President Donald Trump supporters on Tuesday, as hundreds of people lined up to get inside a rally that marks his first political event since the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Officers are addressing criminal behavior near 2nd St & Monroe. Please follow directions to move from the area.
