Is there any better feeling than being cuddled? It makes us feel safe, happy, and loved. Throughout our lives we cuddle with loved ones, our pets, even ourselves. But it's newborns that need a cuddle the most. There's a lot going on in their new world, and they need all the comfort and security they can get. That's why Abington Hospital in Pennsylvania features volunteer 'cuddlers'.It's a program that comes in handy when newborns are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and parents can't be at the hospital. "It is comforting for that mom to know that she can't be here that her baby won't lay in a crib and scream for 5 hours. A volunteer (or a nurse) is going to be in there soothing the baby and picking the baby up," Nurse manager for the Special Care Nursery Michelle Walker told FOX 29. Volunteer Evelyn Mandel is a retired kindergarten teacher, and has a gentle touch that makes her the perfect cuddler. "It is so calming to give this kind of care to a baby. It brings down their stress level as well as mine," said Mandel. "It feels incredibly rewarding to be able to give babies that are small the cuddling that they need." And with comfort comes stability. That means these babies can leave the hospital and go home sooner -- Where there will be even more cuddling.
