Florida rescue dogs headed to Puerto Rico

A team from Boondocks K9 Search and Rescue in Sumterville, Florida is packing up to help out hurricane victims in Puerto Rico.

Since the island was hit by Hurricane Maria on Wednesday, flights from the mainland have been cut off, but a select few begin opening on Friday. Luis Vega got one of those flights.

"It, it's been crazy," said Vega.

Vega, one of his teammates, and one of their search and rescue dogs named Vermette will make the trip Friday night to bring their skills to the devastated territory.

Boondocks trains their dogs to search for survivors during disasters and help rescuers get to those who need help. The dogs are also trained as service dogs to help comfort and calm the people going through those tough times.

Vermette just got her first experiences in her position during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and now she may see whole new levels of devastation from Maria.

For Vega, it's an extra personal mission this time. He himself is from Puerto Rico originally and still has family on the island. As he's watched the images of destruction start to come through, he said he had to bring his team to help in any way they can.

The Boondocks team purchased one-way tickets to Puerto Rico; planning to stay as long as it takes to help the people there.
